I was at a meeting tonight about watershed quality and improvement here in
Inverhuron, something all of us on the Board have been concerned about.
The Pine River Watershed committee, with Saugeen, MNR and the provincial parks
all had presentations including how to raise funding for some projects.
David Cunnings and Paul and Deanna Wilson were also there.
Adrienne Mason from the provincial park has agreed to coordinate any communal efforts we
may want to make.
Her address adriennemason@trentu.ca.
David and the Wilsons were concerned about rebuilding the river bank.
The MNR fellow talked about money being available for these projects, including
from many corporate sponsors, but the projects generally need to be
associated with a charitable organization in order to achieve funding.
Our association could play a seminal role here, especially in garnering funds
from banks who have not been able to find worthwhile projects to fund to
protect watersheds.
As well, Pine River Watershed has gained expertise over
the years and they are willing to share this to any organization with
watershed projects to help in raising funding.
I raised the problem of how to address municipal drains that exacerbate the
spring run-off that can take out any work done to help preserve the natural
heritage sites and water courses and it was suggested that Adrienne get
Janice, Art Wiebe's wife, who is on Kincardine's Environmental Action
Committee, to help us motivate the municipal council to repair the problems
they've created with Tiverton Creek by emphasizing the benefits to
watersheds.
Do you think this is something we as a board want to involve ourselves in
both to help get funding for these watershed problems and then to get the
municipality to correct its drainage problems?
