Information supplied by Eugene Bourgeois

1. The Deep Geological Storage of nuclear wastes on the Bruce site has proceeded to a panel review. Any members of the IDRA interested in becoming a participant need to register their intent to do so to the CEAA. The contact information is: Jennifer.Clark@ceaa-acee.gc.ca Eugene Bourgeois, one of our directors, has already registered to become a participant. We have informed OPG of his decision and it has promised to send us a letter detailing whether he can remain a director of the Board while doing so. They have said informally that they have no objection.
In his intervention, he has commissioned a history of Inverhuron, from aboriginal times to the present. This will be supervised by Prof. David McNab of York University, department of native studies.
Bruce Power has requested of the CNSC that it recommend a panel review for its proposed new build option. It intends to add 4,000 megawatts of capacity with 4 1,000 megawatt turbines to be constructed over a 25 year period. This will add, for much of the period, 4,500 workers to the site for construction.

OPG News Release May 23, 2007

CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE EARNS 10-YEAR LICENCE FOR OPG FACILITY [Tiverton]; Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has received its first ever 10-year operating licence for its Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) located just north of Tiverton, ON.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), the regulatory body for Canada's nuclear industry, announced this decision May 22, 2007.
Keith Mombourquette, Vice President of Nuclear Waste Operation, was pleased with the CNSC decision and commented that the management systems at the WWMF, backed by quality assurance programs, ensure that quality isn't compromised with respect to safety, environment, health or operational performance.
"OPG is a performance driven company and this licence reflects the years of effort staff has put into operating the WWMF," Mombourquette said.
Bruce County Warden and Township of Huron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan, who spoke in favour of the 10-year licence at the CNSC public hearing held in Ottawa, was also supportive of OPG's approach to safe nuclear waste management.
"This decision from the CNSC reflects OPG's 40-year track record in the safe management of nuclear waste at the WWMF and OPG's commitment to ensuring that safety is always number one," Twolan said. "I believe the many submissions to the CNSC from the public in favour of the 10-year licence are also reflective of the community's confidence and trust in OPG's safety record."
Mayor Larry Kraemer of the Municipality of Kincardine, who also travelled to Ottawa to support the 10-year licence for the WWMF, was pleased with the CNSC decision.
"On behalf of the Council of the Municipality of Kincardine, we are pleased with the validation by the CNSC with respect to the new 10-year operating licence at the WWMF. This reinforces the confidence of Council in recognizing Ontario Power Generation as one of the key corporate citizens of our community," Kraemer said.
OPG recognizes and appreciates the community support its facilities have received and is committed to an approach of continuing transparency in maintaining these community relationships.
The WWMF has safely managed all of the low and intermediate level nuclear waste from the Bruce, Pickering and Darlington Generating Stations as well as the high level nuclear waste from the Bruce site for over 40 years. The Pickering and Darlington stations have their own respective facilities for managing high level nuclear waste.

From Bruce Power - SURVEYING THE PUBLIC

We are committed to preserving our environment and to meeting or exceeding the standards of environmental performance demanded by our regulators and our neighbours. To assist us in achieving these goals we regularly monitor the land, water and air that surround us to assess the effect, if any, of our day-to-day operations on the environment. In order to ensure we are monitoring and assessing appropriately, we need to collect information on land use and eating habits. To accomplish this, we have prepared a survey and asked for the co-operation of local residents in completing it.This survey has been mailed out or hand delivered to residents within five kilometres of our site. If you did not receive one , the survey will be made available by Bruce Power at the IDRA Annual meeting on August 4 ,2007. The survey requests specific information regarding the source of water and foodstuffs consumed, as well as population demographics. This information will confirm if the focus groups for the Bruce Power Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program (REMP) adequately represent our local population. The last survey was completed in 2003. Local residents and industries supply samples of water, milk and produce grains for analysis for Bruce Power’s off-site REMP program. Some residents allow access for environmental air monitoring stations on their property. These samples are routinely collected and analyzed for radioactivity by our onsite Health Physics Laboratory. This information is used as part of the calculation for our annual radiological dose to the public.Bruce Power has retained Candesco Corporation, a Toronto consulting firm, to assist in completing the survey. All information collected will remain confidential and will not be used for any other purpose than the Bruce Power Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program.
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Bruce Power Community Relations at (519) 361-7777. A copy of the survey can be obtained from the Bruce Power web site - http://www.brucepower.com/pagecontent.aspx?navuid=14

Recently the South Bruce OPP have received complaints of parties on the beach in public areas involving open fires. While this tends to be a popular nighttime activity it is against the law. With citizens complaining of liquor bottles and garbage left after the evening parties, police will be stepping up their foot patrols in the evening hours. Any resident witnessing one of these beachside parties is asked to contact the OPP immediately so the matter can be dealt with at the time.
