Inverhuron District Ratepayers Association

Spring 2012 Newsletter

www.inverhuronrate.com

Here comes another summer season to have fun at Inverhuron
Inverhuron has more to offer the residents than just a great beach, parks for the kids and an expansive provincial park to explore.  It has a rate payers association with dedicated volunteers who want to ensure that every resident gets something wonderful during their stay, short term or long term and create memories into the next generation. But the board needs the residents to show their support and become a member. For only $20 you can keep in touch with your summer community and goings on throughout the year. Your $20 goes toward getting a new updated Directory every 3 years, keeping equipment such as gazebos and coolers tables on hand and in good condition to use at our events. It keeps the Website ( www.inverhuronrate.com ) up and running and helps to pay for the food in events such as Kids Day and the Corn Roast Your membership is an easy and beneficial way of showing your support of your community. Take the time to get to know the members of the board if possible; we are here to make Inverhuron a wonderful place.
The Board of Directors would appreciate your feedback.

Introduction To IDRA

The Inverhuron and District Ratepayers Association (IDRA) was established in 1978 to serve the community as it was then evolving in a more diverse makeup comprising seasonal and permanent residents. This was trend in demographics was essentially due to the nuclear power development in the area centred on the second concession of Bruce Township near the lakeshore. Prior to the beginning of the early nuclear power developments with the Douglas Power Plant in the early 1960's, most residents of Inverhuron were seasonal and lived near the sand beach from the river south of Bruce Road 15 for a short distance. The predecessor to the IDRA was the Inverhuron Beach Association established in 1946 that focused mostly on items related to beach activities mostly in the summertime. Currently residents of the district of Inverhuron reside from the Concession 2 of Bruce Township on the north side to the border with Lorne Beach on the south. The Aims of the IDRA as established by the constitution of IDRA in 1978 follow.

Aims of the IDRA

To promote the cultural and social interests of the seasonal and permanent  residents and landowners of Inverhuron and District
To promote aquatic, social and other activities for the benefit of all Inverhuron  residents
To study and report on all government and private sector plans affecting Inverhuron residents      and  to make representations to the various levels of governments with respect to such matters

Inverhuron Community Pavilion
New community pavilion Steering Committee
Year round residents Mel McGuigan and John Dickson
Cottagers Bill Stewart, Drew Robertson and Marelle Evans.
Council Ken Craig and Randy Roppel and Anne Eadie is to be alternate.

The pavilion would be approximately 40ft x 80ft and feature public washrooms, something the Inverhuron community currently lacks. Also the need for a place to meet and hold events.
The proposed location is  at the corner of Bruce Road 15 and Albert St.,

In the Kincardine 2012  budget is $25,000 for engineering for the Inverhuron Pavilion

To Beach or not to Beach?

That is the question.

Well Spring has arrived and we are all excited about opening up cottages and everything else that this time of year provides those of us who are fortunate enough to own properties in Inverhuron.
Along with opening cottages, some cottagers are faced with a recurring problem of sand that has drifted around their cottages over the winter.   What to do with it?   The IDRA, in conjunction with the Lake Huron Centre for  Coastal Conservation and the Municipality of Kincardine would like to provide cottage owners with some information on which to make that all important decision. The use of contractors to haul away the sand is a decision we are strongly discouraging.   Inverhuron Beach is a “pocket beach” contained within two rock headlands.  The sand on our beach is that of “relic deposits” from ancient times and is no longer renewing itself.  If it is hauled away the result is that that sand will never be replaced…..it is NOT a renewable resource. As we witnessed last summer there were areas of the main sand beach that were wet and remained that way for the bulk of the summer.  This actually included “sink holes” where several pairs of shoes were lost.   Without the protection of natural dunes or grasses, the wind causes the sand to blow and drift away from the actual beach.   If that sand is not returned to the beach then we get closer and closer the water table.   “As the water table comes closer to the surface, the sand will become wetter and in some wet beach cases, springs will form as  the water table intersects with the beach”.   There is also a concern for E-coli contamination with a wetter environment. BUT this can be saved.  We all have to participate and do our part in an aggressive management approach.
We must support the use of snow fencing along the entire beach, which will work temporarily, and also protect and restore natural dunes.     If this is not done the next recommendation by the Kincardine Coastal Management Plan is landowners should encourage the development of sand dunes stabilized by native beach grasses.

PLEASE think before you haul away……..it’s the future of our beach.
